## 1. ENTRY

### Visa: not required

**Bulgaria is visa-exempt for Japan, 90 days, short-term stay.** Bulgaria appears on Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs list of 74 countries and regions with reciprocal visa exemption arrangements (list dated 1 September 2025). Period of stay granted on landing is 90 days for Bulgaria (the shorter 15/30-day grants apply only to Indonesia, Thailand, Brunei and Qatar). Ordinary passports, tourism/business/visiting friends and relatives/conferences only, no paid activities.

Bulgaria is NOT among the Note-8 countries (Austria, Germany, Ireland, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Mexico, UK) that can extend a short stay to six months. 90 days is the ceiling. Irrelevant for a six-day trip.

There is no application portal, no form, no fee, and no date fixed. The Immigration Services Agency will run it in coordination with MOFA. Development began in April 2026 with at least 17 months of design and build, about 8 months of integration testing, and 3 months of staff training still ahead.

**Warning:** sites already exist offering to "register" travelers for JESTA. There is nothing to register for. When the real system launches it will be run by the Immigration Services Agency and that is the only place money should ever go. Treat every current JESTA offer as a scam.

Note also: when JESTA does eventually apply, it attaches to the existing visa-exemption arrangements, so Bulgaria will be covered.

Free official service from Japan's Digital Agency. Replaces the paper disembarkation card and customs declaration with one unified 2D code (unified since 25 January 2024).

**What she should do before flying:**

1. Create an account (email + password).
2. Register user details from the passport bio page, exactly as printed.
3. Register the entry schedule (arrival flight, arrival date, address in Japan).
4. Complete BOTH forms: the Disembarkation Card for Foreigner (immigration) and the Declaration of Personal Effects and Unaccompanied Articles (customs). An account alone does not produce a usable code.
5. Generate the unified 2D code and screenshot it, including the coloured header above it.

**Practical points:**

- Finish two or three days before departure. In-flight and arrivals-hall connections are unreliable, and the forms take longer than people expect.
- The code must be displayed on a smartphone or tablet. You may register on a PC, but you cannot present from a laptop.
- Each traveler needs an individual record and code. A partner's code cannot stand in.
- Joint kiosks (from April 2025 rollout): at Narita Terminal 3, Haneda Terminal 3 and Kansai Terminal 1, one scan handles immigration and customs and you walk through. At Haneda Terminal 2 and Kansai Terminal 2, kiosks are installed but you still pass a manned immigration counter. Everywhere else, the two-stop flow: code at immigration, collect bags, same code at the customs gate.
- VJW expedited entry works at eight airports only. Haneda and Narita are both covered.
- Paper forms remain a valid fallback if the phone dies or the scanner fails. Not a failure state, an official Plan B.
- **There is no official app.** Apps named "Visit Japan Web" in the App Store and Google Play are third-party; some are built to harvest passport details. Use the browser and add it to the home screen if wanted.

### Passport validity, onward ticket, funds

Japan does not publish a formal six-month validity rule for visa-exempt short-stay visitors; the passport must be valid for the duration of stay. Commercial trackers commonly state six months as the safe margin, and Visit Japan Web itself displays a warning if remaining validity is under six months.

**Practical answer:** carry the return-ticket confirmation and the hotel booking on the phone. A round-trip ticket makes the onward-travel question a non-issue. No specific funds figure is published; a credit card and a booked hotel satisfy it in practice. Japanese immigration rarely presses visa-exempt EU nationals on a six-day trip.

## 2. CARRIERS: SOFIA TO TOKYO

### The structural fact

Sofia has no long-haul service to Asia at all. FlightConnections, August 2026: "The only intercontinental flights to Sofia Airport (SOF) are from Africa and the Middle-East... there are no direct services from the United States, Canada, Southern America, Central America, the Caribbean, Southern Asia, China, Japan, Eastern Asia, South-Eastern Asia, Central Asia or Oceania."

Every viable option is therefore one stop. The realistic hubs are Istanbul, Vienna, Warsaw, Munich and Frankfurt.

### Best connection pairings for an 18 September Tokyo arrival

- **Turkish (recommended):** TK1030 departs SOF 21:10 on 17 Sep, arrives IST 22:40. Connect to TK198 at 02:05, arrive HND 19:20 on 18 Sep. Overnight connection of about 3h25 at IST, then a same-calendar-day Haneda arrival. Haneda to Takanawa is 15 minutes.
- **LOT:** afternoon SOF-WAW, then LO79 at 22:50, arriving NRT 18:30 the next day. Comparable total elapsed time, but Narita instead of Haneda costs another hour and about 2,800 yen on the ground.
- **Austrian:** morning SOF-VIE, then OS25 at 13:30, arriving NRT 08:50 the following morning. Costs a hotel night unless the 18th is the arrival day and she is happy to land at breakfast time.
- **Lufthansa via Munich:** LH714 arrives HND 08:00 +1, the earliest arrival of any option. Good if she wants a full first day, bad if she wants to arrive the same day she leaves.

### Carriers that do NOT work

**Qatar Airways.** Do not book this. Qatar confirmed in July 2026 that it is suspending Doha-Sofia indefinitely, with no resumption scheduled after the 2027 winter season, and is closing its Bulgaria office. The route launched 2011, paused for the pandemic, resumed December 2021, and has now been pulled from the reservation system. Analysts attribute it to aircraft reassignment after Middle East conflict disruption.

Some aggregators still show a SOF-DOH restart dated 17 September 2026 (QR228 outbound, QR227 inbound, 4x weekly, ~4h40, A320-family). Treat that as stale schedule inventory, not bookable service.

**Wizz Air Middle East feeders.** Gone. Wizz Air announced on 14 July 2025 that it would suspend all Wizz Air Abu Dhabi locally based flight operations effective 1 September 2025 and exit the joint venture, citing engine reliability in hot environments, geopolitical volatility and regulatory barriers. There is no Wizz long-haul feeder to Asia from anywhere.

**Air China, China Eastern, Air Serbia, Etihad, Emirates.** None serve Sofia. Sofia's only current intercontinental service is flydubai to Dubai, 1x daily, Boeing 737. flydubai does not fly to Japan, so a Dubai routing means a separate-ticket Emirates connection with no protection if the first leg misconnects. Not recommended.

**Aeroflot / Russian carriers.** Not applicable. EU airspace remains closed to Russian carriers and vice versa; a Bulgarian passenger cannot route Sofia-Moscow-Tokyo on a Russian carrier from an EU departure point.

### Recommendation

**Turkish Airlines, TK1030 + TK198, into Haneda.** One stop, single ticket, protected connection, arrives Haneda 19:20 the same calendar day she departs, and Haneda to Takanawa is a 15-minute 327-yen train ride. Turkish also has the densest Sofia feeder (3-4 daily) so a missed connection re-books same-day. LOT is the fallback if Turkish prices badly; it lands at Narita, which costs an extra hour and about 2,800 yen each way.

## 3. OVERLAND AND SEA OPTIONS

**Verdict up front: there is no realistic non-air route, and none of them is cheaper. For a six-day trip they are absurd.** Detail follows because it was asked for.

### Trans-Siberian plus Vladivostok-Japan ferry

**The ferry exists and is running.** The Eastern Dream sails Vladivostok - Donghae (South Korea) - Sakaiminato (Tottori, Japan), operated by DuWon Shipping of South Korea, which took over from the bankrupt DBS Cruise Ferry. Service to Sakaiminato resumed in 2024 after a five-year hiatus caused by the pandemic and the DBS bankruptcy. It is the same vessel, 11,400 GT, 530 passengers, 250 vehicles.

Operational reality: weekly sailings, roughly two days Russia to Japan, and the ship stops in Donghae only a few hours (no change of vessel required if continuing to Japan). Annual dry-dock suspension runs late February to late March (2026: 26 Feb to 22 Mar, resuming 23 Mar). The Sakaiminato terminal moved southwest, away from the city centre and nearer Yonago Airport, with no confirmed shuttle. The 2025 report describes about 20 passengers aboard and negligible cargo, i.e. a service of questionable commercial durability.

**Russia transit is legally open to her.** Bulgaria is on the 64-country list eligible for Russia's unified electronic visa. Single entry, 120-day validity from issue, maximum 30-day stay (both extended from 60 days / 16 days on 23 August 2025). Apply between 86 and 4 days before entry through the MFA Consular Department portal. No invitation letter, hotel booking or purpose documentation required. Processing takes up to 4 calendar days. Valid at all international border crossings and throughout Russian territory since August 2023.

**Why it fails.** Sofia to Moscow requires an indirect flight (no EU-Russia direct service). Moscow to Vladivostok is roughly 9,300 km of rail at about seven days on the Rossiya. The ferry then runs weekly, so a missed sailing costs seven days. Sakaiminato to Tokyo is another 800 km. Total one-way: two to three weeks, plus visa lead time. Against a 17-hour flight. Dead.

### China rail plus Shanghai/Osaka ferry

**Paperwork is easy.** China's unilateral visa exemption covers Bulgarian ordinary passport holders for stays up to 30 days for business, tourism, family visits, exchange visits or transit, extended through 24:00 on 31 December 2026.

**The ferry.** The Suzhou Hao (Su Zhou Hao) runs Shanghai to Osaka weekly, operated by Shanghai International Ferry / Shanghai Ferry of Japan.

A sister vessel, the Xinjianzhen, alternates Shanghai to Osaka and Shanghai to Kobe, giving roughly two weekly sailings between them.

**Why it fails.** She would still have to fly Sofia to Shanghai (itself a one-stop flight of similar cost to Sofia-Tokyo), then add 46 hours at sea and a Shinkansen from Osaka to Tokyo (about 2h30, ~14,000 yen). The ferry alone costs 160 EUR or more and burns two days. Total saving: negative. Total time cost: three extra days minimum, and only if the weekly Tuesday sailing aligns.

### Korea combo: cheap flight to Seoul/Busan plus ferry

This is the only surface option worth even a paragraph of consideration, and it still loses.

**Busan to Fukuoka.** The New Camellia, operated by Camellia Line, is the sole remaining passenger ship on the route. Queen Beetle (JR Kyushu Jet Ferry) left the Korea-Japan business in December 2024 and Kobee has also withdrawn. There is no fast craft any more.

On top: 6,000 won port tax plus 1,000 won tourism fund leaving Busan; 3,000 yen Japanese international tourist tax leaving Hakata (raised in 2026, so any online figure of 1,000 yen is stale). Checked baggage 800 yen for the first 20 kg, 300 yen per extra 10 kg.

Terminals: Busan International Passenger Terminal, check-in 3rd floor, connected to Busan Station by a covered footbridge, about a 7-minute walk. Hakata Port International Terminal, check-in 1st floor, bus 88 from Hakata Station ~12 min, bus 80 from Tenjin ~10 min, taxi from Fukuoka Airport ~20 min.

**September 2026 suspensions matter.** Busan departures were suspended on 5 and 12 September 2026 (and 4, 11 July, 29 August), with the corresponding Hakata departure suspended the following day. The calendar is published month by month.

**Busan to Osaka.** PanStar Cruise Ferry, departing Busan Sun 15:00 and Tue/Thu 16:00, arriving Osaka Sun 08:30 and Tue/Thu 09:00. Return from Osaka Port Mon/Wed/Fri 17:00, arriving next day 10:00.

**Busan to Shimonoseki.** Bukwan Ferry (Seonghee on odd days, Hamayu on even days), 21:00 from Busan, ashore 08:00 next day. Same source as the Busan-Fukuoka guide.

**Why it fails on arithmetic.** Take the cheapest realistic version: SOF to ICN on Turkish, LOT or Qatar-equivalent at roughly the same money as SOF to Tokyo (Seoul is not meaningfully cheaper from Sofia on a one-stop), then KTX Seoul to Busan (about 60,000 won, 2h40), then the ferry at 12,000 yen second class plus taxes, then Hakata to Tokyo by Shinkansen at about 23,000 yen and five hours. That is roughly 35,000 to 40,000 yen and two extra travel days added to a flight that already cost the same as flying straight to Tokyo. It is not cheaper. It is not faster. On a six-day trip it consumes a third of the holiday.

### Bottom line

**Fly.** Book the Turkish one-stop into Haneda, or LOT into Narita. Every surface option costs more money, more days, or both. The ferries are worth knowing about for a future six-week trip; they have no place in this one.

## 4. GROUND TRANSPORT IN TOKYO

Her partner's hotel is in Takanawa, Minato-ku, which is functionally Shinagawa. That makes **Haneda dramatically the better arrival airport** and is worth paying a fare premium for.

Notes: Keikyu through-runs onto the Toei Asakusa Line, so many trains reach Sengakuji, Shimbashi, Higashi-Ginza, Nihombashi, Asakusa and Oshiage with no transfer. There is no practical direct train from Haneda to Shibuya or Shinjuku; both need one transfer at Shinagawa or Hamamatsucho. Last Keikyu and Monorail departures are around midnight. On weekends and holidays, the Monorail and Yamanote Discount Ticket gives Haneda to any Yamanote station for a flat 540 yen, which beats everything.

Last services: N'EX ~21:50 from Narita, with no Shinjuku runs after 21:30. Skyliner ~22:30 to Ueno. A TK300 arrival at NRT 19:10 or an LO79 arrival at 18:30 comfortably makes both.

Best value combo if landing at Narita and heading to Ueno/Asakusa: Skyliner plus Tokyo Subway 24-hour ticket at 3,100 yen.

### Haneda vs Narita, decided

Haneda is 15 km from central Tokyo, Narita is 60-70 km. Haneda to Shinagawa is 14 minutes at 327 yen; Narita to Shinagawa is 75 minutes at 3,140 yen. The difference is roughly an hour and 2,800 yen each way. **If the fare gap between a Haneda routing and a Narita routing is under about 50 EUR, take Haneda.** For a trip of four days or fewer the guidance is unambiguous: pay the premium.

**Two traps she will hit:**

1. **Pre-arrival top-up is blocked from Bulgaria.** The app permits loading before arrival only from South Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia and Vietnam. Flying from Europe, she can install the app in Sofia but must complete card setup after landing. Connect to airport Wi-Fi in the arrivals hall; it takes about five minutes, still faster than the ticket machine queue.

2. **If Suica does not appear in Apple Wallet, it is the iPhone Region setting, not the Apple ID.** Settings > General > Language & Region > Region > Japan, add the card in Wallet, then switch the region back. The card stays. Do NOT change the Apple ID country or App Store region; that is a much bigger and unnecessary change.

Also: foreign-issued **Visa cards are declined at the top-up step noticeably often**; Mastercard or Amex go through. This is a Visa network restriction, not an Apple or JR problem. And set Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay > Express Travel Card to the Suica so she can tap through gates without unlocking the phone. On iPhone XS and later, Express Card mode still works for up to five hours after the battery dies.

Physical alternatives: Welcome Suica (physical) is deposit-free but expires 28 days after issue; a regular Suica costs from 1,000 yen including a 500 yen refundable deposit and does not expire. Both are available at JR East Travel Service Centers at Haneda and Narita and at Tokyo, Shinjuku, Shinagawa and Ueno stations.

**If she is on Android:** Android phones bought outside Japan lack the FeliCa/Osaifu-Keitai chip, so Mobile Suica is impossible. She must buy a physical card.

**Recommendation: Ubigi 10GB for 7 days at US$14.** It is the best-value short-trip plan in the market, runs on Docomo and KDDI with 5G, permits tethering, and auto-activates on arrival. Typical tourist usage is 400-700 MB per day on maps, translation, LINE and social, so 10GB across a week is generous headroom.

Two things worth knowing: Airalo raised Japan unlimited pricing sharply in early 2026 (7-day went from ~$15 to ~$27, 30-day from ~$35 to ~$72), so it is no longer the budget pick. And Ubigi's unlimited plan is an auto-renewing monthly subscription that cannot be cancelled for three months; she should buy the one-off bucket, not the subscription.

**Practical advice for a guest.** Since Simona is travelling with a member of the band, the correct route is a guest-list seat arranged through the artist or the venue's artist liaison, not a public booking. If that is not certain, act now: general sale has been open since 29 July and these are three nights of a centennial show. If she does book publicly, the Side Area L/R seats and the counter avoid the seat charge entirely, so the total is just the 12,500 yen music charge.

Note the 2nd show on 21, 22 and 23 September starts at 19:30, which is after the Grand Prince check-in on the 20th, so no scheduling conflict with the hotel move.

Structure of the evening: first half is technical (Greg walks through his AI-agent fleet setup, participants install it on their own laptops and configure it, then the group builds and deploys a small music co-creation app together). Second half is a solo piano concert with that app in the audience's hands, joined by scanning a QR code from the seat. Participants leave with a printed field manual, a command reference and a starter kit, plus a 30-day follow-on path. Attendees can come without a laptop and simply watch, or attend Session 2 only for the music.

The page also confirms Greg arrives in Tokyo ahead of the Blue Note run on 21-23 September.

**Gap:** the Session-2-only ticket price is on the booking widget, not in the page copy, so I could not extract it. The 9,000 yen figure covers both sessions.

**Logistics note:** the venue is a nine-minute walk from Shibuya Station and about seven minutes from Shinsen. This is a strong argument for putting her in a Shibuya hotel for the nights of 18 and 19 September rather than in Takanawa.

Three concrete options, all in Shibuya, all within walking distance of both Shibuya Station and the FabCafe venue, and all one train stop from Minami-Aoyama.

**Pick: Shibuya Excel Hotel Tokyu.** It is the cheapest of the three at a verified rate, it is physically attached to Shibuya Station, it is a five-minute walk down Dogenzaka to the FabCafe venue on the evening of the 19th, and it is an Airport Limousine Bus stop, which matters if she ends up landing at Narita. One guest review flags a musty corridor smell and that breakfast is not included; another flags heavy construction around the station approach. Neither is disqualifying for two nights.

Caveat on all three: these are indicative rates, not quotes for 18-19 September 2026. Mid-September is shoulder season and Shibuya rates move fast. Check live on Booking or Google Hotels before committing.

### Grand Prince Hotel Shin Takanawa: second guest in the room

**Unverified, and it probably matters.** The hotel publishes room types and maximum occupancy but no public extra-person tariff.

**The rule that applies in practice:** Japanese hotels, Prince included, price by occupancy rather than by room. A reservation made for one adult will normally need to be amended and re-priced to add a second adult, and walking a second person in without notice is not the done thing. Since the room is presumably booked by the promoter, the label or Blue Note, the correct action is for her partner to notify the booking party and the hotel that a second adult will be staying from 20 September, before arrival.

I could not confirm the specific per-person surcharge from any source. This is the one item in this report that requires a phone call rather than a web check. The hotel's online reservation system also carries a note that credit-card room guarantees for online reservations were discontinued in September 2024, and there was a system maintenance notice dated 26 August 2026, both of which argue for phoning rather than fiddling with the web booking.

## GAPS AND CAUTIONS

1. **Qatar Airways SOF-DOH shows as both suspended and restarting 17 September 2026** depending on the source. The July 2026 news report (suspension, office closure) is more recent and more specific than the aggregator schedule data. Do not book it.
2. **Grand Prince second-guest charge is unconfirmed.** No public tariff. Requires a call to the hotel or a message to whoever holds the booking.
3. **FabCafe Session-2-only price** is on the booking widget, not the page copy.
4. **Blue Note tickets have been on general sale since 29 July 2026.** If a guest-list seat is not already confirmed, check availability now.
5. **Hotel rates quoted are indicative,** not live quotes for 18-19 September 2026.
6. **Camellia Line September sailings had suspensions on 5 and 12 September 2026.** Moot given the fly recommendation, but noted for completeness.
